A few weeks ago, I wrote a post about heavy weight hinges and how to tell them apart from standard weight hinges. That reminded me of another “unidentified hardware door-related object” that some readers may have wondered about (or may have never given it a second thought!).
When you see a wire like this in a hollow metal hinge preparation, its purpose is to allow the door to accommodate standard weight or heavy weight hinges. Because the thickness varies between the two hinge types, the wire remains in place for standard weight hinges and is removed to create a deeper hinge prep for heavy weight hinges.
I’ve looked high and low and I can not find a name for this wire…any ideas?

Curries uses what they call an ‘Ultima’ hinge reinforcement which is basically an 18 gauge steel shim plate that you can remove if you need to use heavyweight hinges over standard weight. Not sure what these wires are technically called though.
Steelcraft’s pricebook calls it a wire spacer with the door hinge part on page 117.
That’s easy! I believe the technical team is “standard ductile dimensional compliance alignment encabulator.” Anybody knows that. 😉
Looks to be lightly stamped “Steel Craft” then a long part or serial number,
Not where I can search right now but think that is where to start for information

I would name it a 4.5″ Non-Handed Wire Hinge Shim.

Its a shim that should be removed for the thicker HD hinges. Its left in place for thinner regular duty hinges to keep them flush to the door edge.
