This story from WWLTV does a great job of illustrating the importance of compartmentalizing a building for fire protection. It focuses on the firestopping at the new MSY airport in New Orleans, and discusses the potential results of voids that are not code-compliant. Some of the same effects could apply to non-compliant fire doors. It’s not often that a news report dedicates 10+ minutes to fire protection, so check it out!

Great news piece
My favorite projects to inspect:: Government, no matter what entity.
So from the beginning, checks were in place.
When opening date came, well some of those checks had been bypassed.
SO what is the job of a project manager??? To manage the entire job?
Than you have what appears city inspectors, that might have been in over their head???
In cases like that, you rely on the experts to do the inspections, and you still spot check their work. Plus get all the documentation, showing the inspections done.
For firestop, I like the companies that label EVERY firestop they have inspected, and the inspector that signed off on it.
You wonder what other short cuts were taken?????
The liability for this will be out of this world.
It is concerning because firestopping is so important. It is not the first time or the last time this will happen.
Unfortunately, I agree. And HI David! 🙂

To make things worse, I even found a video of people blatantly ignoring a fire alarm activation in this exact terminal – despite the recorded voice message clearly stating “Please evacuate the building by the nearest exit.”
YIKES!
