On February 20th, 2003, a fire at the Station Nightclub killed 100 people and injured more than 200. Last Saturday, our family movie night included a viewing of an episode of the TV show 48 hours, where this fire was discussed in depth. If you have not seen it yet, I encourage you to watch the show.
This is how we avoid having history repeat itself…again. A major contributor to the fire and loss of life was the packing foam installed as soundproofing on the walls, ceilings, and at least one door, but the exits played a role as well. For my 20YO college student and her boyfriend who is a musician, it was a powerful illustration of why I always know where the exits are, and that they are clear and available for egress.

I watched it, too. There is a lot we can all learn about life safety from this story. There isn’t just one thing we can point at and say that’s what caused all of those people to die. There is plenty of blame to spread around.
A Tragedy that could have been prevented if only people did their jobs
Haven’t seen the 48HRS show, but the video that’s been in numerous Life Safety Code programs really drives home the need for Codes, inspections and follow-up. It is easy to discuss this tragedy with some business owners and get them to understand the importance of things that “under value”.
Watched it
Seemed like everyone was saying ,,,, Not My Fault…
Sad
Did learn a few new things about the incident.
Sometimes, when certain people don’t do their jobs correctly, other people have to pay the price. It would seem that it is all coming back to the Business Owner. But is the Business Owner really the responsible party? How was he supposed to know that the vendor delivered the wrong type of insulation? Surely though. the owner should have said NO to the pyrotechnics!
