I think these short videos from NFPA are great, I will keep sharing them when the topic is related to iDigHardware’s focus area. This month’s video discusses the pros and cons of dynamic exit signs.
A few things to note:
a) If you have ideas for future NFPA videos, you can leave them in the comment area on Youtube,
b) The next video will be about a tragedy that heavily impacted the codes for doors and hardware – the fire at the Cocoanut Grove Nightclub, and
c) If you’re in Cleveland, come to our code update roundtable class at 8:30 a.m. (room 21) and/or the Women Opening Doors panel discussion at 11:00 a.m. (room 13). I’ll be in the Allegion booth after that (I still have iDigHardware cookies!) and at the after-party tonight.

Great post . Interesting topic Exit Egress this way out …sometimes among all the other signs they just get lost
Especially in airports .
This is a really interesting concept. I do agree with the concerns, but I could see, especially in high-risk areas (education, convention centers, airports) that validity of something like this. I would like to see it first implemented in terms of locating where the fire is and directing people away from the fire–this could be done without human intervention–fire alarm is pulled or triggered in zone A, so close off/redirect routes through zone B instead. However, for active shooter situations, I can’t fathom in my mind yet how that could be effective.
Also I would like to see the pictogram signs (the ones found in Europe and around the world) be used more widely. (I have seen them in the US once, likely involving a variance.)
