Hello Lori,
this should be illegal due to not everyone looks for hardware (door closers, hinge barrels or handles/panics, and if its a full plate glass door, floorplates on floor closers or top pivots) when locating the door due to the way the eyes work, with same colors and certain lighting conditions/contrasts(let’s say this door didn’t have a closer) the person would not be able to find the door as it blended into the wall.
same thing for the unmarked full glass doors, not everyone is looking at the floor in hopes to find the rectangular plates indicating the use of a floor closer, since people do not look down (or up to look for any pivots or the head jamb) the person might panic and bump into a plate glass window and can lead to injuries/risk of lawsuit against the owner because of laws of fire/emergnecy egress,
best suggestion for the room or area, paint the doorframe in a different color so it will not be same contrast of the walls/floor (such as a wood grain brown or maybe darker blue) to make the door more noticeable to those who may have problems seeing (astigmatism/low vision)
-Jess the door closer doctor
Hi Jess –
Yes, it is illegal.
– Lori
I sure hope they didnt pay the guy that painted this much….
The walkway in the pic should line up with the door… Then it would work… I’ll bet there are some nose prints on the wall just to the right of that tree….
Not in defense of this. But in what way is this illegal?
Thanks for asking! Egress doors can’t have decorations, mirrors, or a paint job like the one in the photo. This door is providing egress from the bathroom, so the door must be visible.
OK. Good to know.
