1/31/11 – #18 of 365: I’ve walked past this door several times per week for the last 3 1/2 years and thanks to this project I finally stopped to take a photo (or two). The semi-permanent latch-preventer has recently been upgraded from plain corrugated cardboard to the more decorative version.

1/30/11 – #17 of 365: I thought the 3 feet of snow on the ground meant that we could get a break from soccer until the spring, but now that SmartyPants has hit the big time (10&Under Travel Team), she plays year round. Which is why I was at an indoor soccer field looking at this exit door from the field, that can only be opened from the outside.

1/29/11 – #16 of 365: I’ll bet you an idighardware keychain that door says exit on the other side.

1/28/11 – #15 of 365: Don’t forget to shovel out those fire hydrants and bollards!
——————————————————————————————
1/27/11 – #14 of 365: I have nothing to say.

1/26/11 – #13 of 365: I’m not a weather person. I don’t make small talk about the weather, I don’t watch the weather, I don’t really care about the weather unless I’m headed to a soccer game or an outdoor concert. But since Project 365 began I’ve found myself photographing weather-related things and talking about snow. It’s cold enough to freeze Diet Coke to the explosion point, we’re expecting 8-12 inches of snow tonight, and tomorrow may be yet another snow day. Woo. Hoo.

1/25/11 – #12 of 365: This is one of many LCN potbelly closers in Kidzilla’s preschool. Seeing the “shield” on this closer reminds me of when my pal Dave Rocca and I used to pull out our “badges” and joke about being the Closer Police. I still have my shield / badge…maybe I should start arresting all of those naked closers.

1/24/11 – #11 of 365: I’m doing some decluttering around the house again (still) and I just unearthed two of my old drivers’ licenses in a box that I haven’t touched since I moved to this house in 1999. It’s hard to believe that official licenses were laminated like this – I could have made a fortune on fake IDs. The freaky thing is…I remember the day I got the Vermont license because I stopped at the registry on my way to a DHI meeting. The other freaky thing is that I grew an inch when I moved to Massachusetts.
I’m feeling really old right now.

1/23/11 – #10 of 365: I’m working on a special project “on my own time,” which I’ll tell you more about when it’s ready for public review. I have a hard time distinguishing between my time and company time, but since today’s Sunday I think it’s ok to put some time in on it. I’m sure there’s some metaphoric significance to the fact that this broken clock inhabited by pigeons made me think of “My Time,” especially if you knew that this isn’t actually a clock tower, just two sides with the backs of the clocks exposed to the world, but if I take time to explore down that path I won’t get anything done.

1/22/11 – #9 of 365: I thought this was a pretty cool effect…the icicles have melted and frozen a bunch of times and the position of the leaves and branches has changed due to the weight of the ice, so most of the icicles aren’t vertical. I needed the porch railing to give it some perspective. Would I have analyzed the icicles on my shrubbery if I wasn’t working on this project? Doubtful.

1/21/11 – #8 of 365: Dear God, please give me the strength and patience to survive another snow day with 3 bickering kids cooped up in the house. Protect us from failure of the internet, electricity, and battery power that supply our multitude of electronic entertainment devices. Assist me in finding something to serve for lunch, since the pizza man has suspended delivery service for the duration of the storm. Protect the clients that I speak to on the phone from overhearing inappropriate words exchanged during Lego-related arguments, and guide me to hide in the closet before answering calls from those who may influence my future career opportunities. Help me to complete my work, enjoy my family, and catch up on the laundry, and ensure my husband’s safe journey home ASAP. Amen.

1/20/11 – #7 of 365: This morning I grabbed my “big camera” (a Canon T1i) when I let the dog out, and to my surprise there was a beautiful hawk right next to my driveway. Of course, when I aimed at him, he flew up to the top of my neighbor’s tree. I took this photo from REALLY far away. I got a beautiful macro lens for Christmas because I like to take close-ups…maybe next year Santa will bring me a longer zoom.

1/19/11 – #6 of 365: We had our Boston Chapter CSI meeting tonight and the guest speaker did a presentation about changes to the Mass State Building Code. I thought it was ironic that the screen was completely blocking the exit door.

1/18/11 – #5 of 365: After having the kids at home for 6 days (2 snow days, 1 teacher professional development day, the weekend, and MLK Day), I woke up this morning channeling my mother – “Come hell or high water, you’re going to school today!” I haven’t thought of that phrase for years but I could hear my mother’s voice saying it. Today’s snowstorm was already in full swing when I woke up, but I think the superintendent was channeling my mother too, and we didn’t have a snow day. Instead, I waited by the phone for the “early dismissal” call, and sat in gridlock in the school driveway. People wonder why I work in the middle of the night. Now you know.
(PS. My mother is alive and well…I was channeling her from Florida, not from the grave.)

1/17/11 – #4 of 365: We have a lot of big piles of dirty snow around town, and this one is right in front of the accessible entrance to this building. I guess they’re not worried about accommodating wheelchairs until spring. No, there isn’t a path behind the pile.

1/16/11 – #3 of 365: This is the back door to one of our favorite weekend breakfast places. The UHO (Unidentified Hardware Object) at the top of the door is a mirror – the type that you clamp on the rear-view mirror in your car. This is the inner door of the vestibule, there was another aluminum storefront door behind me and I was standing in the vestibule. I tried various angles to figure out what they were using the mirror for…I’m guessing it was a security measure to see if anyone was trying to follow the person unlocking the door.

1/15/11 – #2 of 365: My Magnum has never let me down and has carried us through Chip Falcon’s Road Trip and many others, but it was time for her to go. On the way to my office I stopped for a car wash, and the guy put the driver’s seat so far forward that it wouldn’t go back. I think she was protesting.

1/14/11 – #1 of 365: I’m a recovering perfectionist, so choosing photo 1/365 could have turned into Analysis Paralysis for me. I tuned out the voices, went outside, and took this photo. A snowstorm left us with about 20″ of snow, so the kids have had 2 snow days followed by a 4-day weekend. I’ve been working at home and juggling parental duties with my husband. I hope I survive until Tuesday but I’m officially at the half-way point.
