Someone asked me about the requirements for automatic door signage today, and I hadn’t really looked into it before. Most people just use the stickers that come with the operators, don’t they? To find the answer, I referred to ANSI/BHMA A156.19-2007, since the auto operators in question were the low-energy type. I think the reason behind the question was a desire to use custom signage, but based on A156.19, there’s not much leeway.
~ Signage has to be visible from either side of the door, instructing the user on operation and function.
~ Signs must be mounted 50″ +/-12″ from the floor to the center of the sign.
~ Letters shall be 5/8″ high minimum.
~ For low-energy operators, the sign must read “Caution Automatic Door.”
~ Sign must be 6″ minimum diameter, with black letters on a yellow background.
~ Additional information may be included on the sign.
.
In addition to the signs above, you also need signs describing the operation of the door:
~ These signs have to be blue with white letters, and are mounted on both the push and pull sides of the opening.
…For low energy operators with a wall switch, the sign reads, “Activate switch to operate.”
…For low energy operators with the push-n-go feature, the signs read “Push to operate,” and “Pull to operate.”
…For power assist doors with a wall switch, the sign reads, “Easy open door – Activate switch then open door.”
…For power assist doors with push-n-go, the signs read “Easy open door – Push to operate,” and “Easy open door – Pull to operate.”
